"The leader"

I get a lot of questions from home about communism and how that plays into my daily life here. Besides editing blatant propaganda from 8:30-5:30 M-F, I hadn't really noticed it much.

But today I had a pretty hilarious, yet jarring moment. An employee in the H.R. department asked me for my phone number and I gave it to him, but when I asked why he wanted it, he replied: "The leader needs it in case he has to contact you."

The leader?! I don't think it gets more communist than that. At first I thought to myself, "Does he mean Hu Jintao himself will be giving me orders?" But no, it's apparently a common way to refer to one's boss here.

err...maybe something got lost in translation?

Also, my favorite part of communism in China was paying for everything in bills with Mao's face on it
